Two pre-1931 runs in as many weeks! Last weekend was our Section’s Veteran and Vintage Run and one week later (today) was the Wessex Section’s On the Beaded Edge Run. We’re certainly spoilt for choice in this area and many of the same machines and riders were at both events.
Strictly speaking, I believe only Peter Miller fully conformed to the “rules” of this run as his Royal Enfield was using beaded edge rims while the rest of us cheated with our modern wired-on rims 🙂 . Correction: Ian Clarke informs me that the other Royal Enfield on the run, Brian Pope’s outfit, was also on beaded edge rims. These Royal Enfield owners are obviously made of sterner stuff than the rest of us.
Great weather with a good turnout. We started and finished at The Old Ox Inn in Shillingstone and took in 40 miles of the Dorset countryside, including two fords at Fifehead Neville, and with a coffee stop at The Fox in Higher Ansty.
Although not part of today’s run, Paul Miles and I undertook a test run the day before…and met for a coffee at Thyme after Time Café, Spire Hill Farm near Stalbridge. Margo, who runs the café, was kind enough to take this rather good photo:

“Club night at Henstridge this evening, car and bikes, in the sunshine . Fantastic turnout, despite some football being on the telly. What better way to spend a summer’s eve than with friends, a pint and a lot of motorcycles to talk about? Your correspondent makes no apologies for the large number of pictures of Peter’s Brough Superior SS80; an unhealthy level of interest was displayed, most unseemly.”
On FB, Paul asks the reader to decide if that is patina or rust on the beautiful mid 1930’s BSA Y13. Bit of a daft question if you ask me, as it’s clearly patina and I’d have that Y13 over the SS80 any day of the week (sorry Peter).
Sorry I missed the evening…and it wasn’t due to the footie. I was tying to get my MGB back together…for the Car and Bike Club Night(!) but ran out of time…next year then 🙁 .
Yesterday was the Dorset Section’s 40th annual Veteran & Vintage Run held at the Leigh Village Hall and expertly organised by Rod and Carol Hann.
As this is a pre-1931 run, I was unable to take part last year having no suitable bike. But that all changed in February of this year with the purchase of a 1930 Ariel, so I’m trying to take part in as many of these V&V runs as possible this year: Banbury a few weeks ago, our own V&V run yesterday and Wessex V&V Section’s On The Beaded Edge run next weekend. Busy, busy, busy.
Rod reports: “We had 21 entrants and 35 people sat down to the lunch. No real breakdowns but several bikes suffered heat exhaustion and had to be pushed to be coaxed back into life, my own included. Of note is that Andrew Samways from Bridport has done 39 of the 40 V and V Runs.“. It wasn’t only the bikes that were suffering from heat exhaustion; it was a very hot day (nudging 30C) and with melting tarmac in places.
Excellent run with an excellent coffee stop at the Sherborne Steam and Waterwheel Centre that had a working day with the steam up. Ken Druce and I were unable to stay for lunch back at Leigh Village Hall but, as in previous years, I’m sure that was also excellent — thank you Rod and Carol!

Held in conjunction with the Wessex V&V Section, there was a great selection of bikes with riders coming from at least four Sections: Stonehenge, Wessex V&V, Dorset and Bournemouth & New Forest.
The rain did not materialise and we all had a pleasant 30 mile jaunt around the Witchampton area followed by 1, 2 or 3 scoops of ice cream from Barford Farmhouse, which was the start and end point of the run.
Mixed fortunes for some Dorset Section riders. I lost part of my Ariel steering damper on the way home, Alan Skinner suffered a block main jet on his Rudge, Paul Miles had planned on bringing his Zenith v-twin but the tank started leaking and he had to settle drudging his Rudge instead and Ken Druce didn’t break down on his Sunbeam S7.
Ken and myself attended the Marston Sunbeam Rally this weekend, this year is the 100th anniversary of John Marston’s death and the theme being the Sunbeam Racing bikes. Many members brought theirs but we were loaned bikes from the Black County Museum collection. We had 3 of the 1930 works bikes together for the first time since 1930, and 2 of them were started and run round the field. You also will see our freind Winold sitting on one of the sprint bike which was started and run. It sounded like thunder when they were running such a privilege.
The weather was excellent, and was attended by more than 90 people, 70+ bikes from the 1910’s up to the 30’s but the highlight of course was the racing bikes.
The atmosphere and the opportunity to talk Sunbeams is fantastic, also we picked up some bits that never seem to come available for especially the early 1920’s bikes, so now l can get the 1920 bike finished.
I have put a few photos together including the members bikes that won the concourse hope you like them and Phil’s Model 9 which as you can see is better than the day it was made, Winold’s Model 7 which needs a bit more work, but the engine now rebuilt by Chris Odlin, also an imposter turned up with a very nice Norton.
A good weekend had by all, thanks to Trevor for organising the weekend, oh and the Banks Sunbeam Beer!!
All this fine weather and with so many Sections in this neck of the woods means we’re spoilt for choice in terms of runs to take part in. Before I get to last weekend’s photos, don’t forget:

Sunday 8th July : our own annual Veteran and Vintage Run, organised by Rod Hann. Pre-1931 bikes only, so go to the back of your garage and brush the cobwebs of your girder fork bike. South Dorset Section’s Lawrence of Arabia Run on Sunday 1st July 2018
The South Dorset section has gone through some hard times in the last 6 months and yesterday in the Top of the Town car park in Dorchester it was plain to see as we had two opposing runs taking place: this VMCC run and another by those ex-South Dorset Section members who chose to leave the Section. Sad to see. But a good turnout from the Dorset Section in support of our South Dorset colleagues.
I had a cracking ride down to the start with Paul Miles; we went via the top road between Buckland Newton and Charminster, certainly one of my favourite roads in Dorset. As far as the run was concerned, Paul and I stopped at Moreton Tea Rooms…and that was it: we drank several pots of tea, ate tea cakes and chatted for 90 minutes about nothing 🙂 .
