Report on Jeff Clew Memorial Run 2017

Report from Rod Hann on last Sunday’s (27th July) Jeff Clew Memorial Run:

The forecast of heavy rain showers was thankfully wrong for the Jeff Clew Memorial Run held on Sunday 30th July, 2017. 40 riders assembled at the Haynes International Motor Museum, Sparkford, before setting off on either the 40 or 70 mile routes around Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire. Suitable coffee stops had been arranged mid route. Returning to Sparkford all judging was done and the prizes were presented by Alison and Pippa (Jeff’s two daughters) before everyone made for home still in the dry. A good day was had by all. The Award Winners were:-

Haynes Shield (Best Overall) John GUY 1929 Terrot

Hinton Motorcycles Trophy (Best Veteran or Vintage) Dave JOYCE 1920 Triumph

Bob Foster Trophy (Best Post Vintage) Vernon COX 1937 Rudge

Sorry I missed it but had some family over from Australia. ¬†Looks like a good turnout and refreshing to see some girder fork bikes taking part ūüėČ ¬†Anyone else got any more photographs?

Pictures from the VMCC Founder’s Day 2017

Always a favourite event in my calendar, the annual VMCC Founder’s Day at Stanford Hall in Leicestershire, and this year was no exception. A few patches of rain but nothing to stop everyone enjoying the great autojumble, static displays and arena shows…and the Hall does a very nice cup of tea and cake.

The George Formby lookalike riding the black-and-white chequed Triumph was most amusing. ¬†His name is¬†Graeme Hardy and he has an interesting story here —>¬†

In no particular order, a load of snaps:

Pictures from the Car and Bike Club Night 2017

The first club night at our new venue, the Henstridge Golf Club…and what a great start! ¬†Warm, sunny evening for our annual Car and Bike club night and with a fantastic turnout.

My personal favourite vehicle of the evening was a mid 1930s BSA Y13 750cc OHV V-twin (in the photos above). I used to own BSA side-valve versions of this V-twin and have always lusted after a Y13, or its smaller brother, the J12. ¬†One day maybe….

Y13 starting up for the journey home.

Pictures from the Lawrence of Arabia Run 2017

Good weather meant a big turnout for the VMCC South Dorset Section’s annual Lawrence of Arabia Run, with riders coming from many of the surrounding Sections (Isle of Wight, Dorset etc).

No maps to follow as the drop-off system was used…and worked well with no lost riders. ¬†And as far as I know, no breakdowns or accidents. ¬†Only complaint was that it was about 3 degree too hot but we shouldn’t complain about good weather… ūüôā

Gathering for the start at the Spitfire Club in Crossways:

Coffee Stop at West Holme Garden Centre:

Lunch Stop at The Pulpit Inn at Portland Bill:

Finishing back at the Spitfire Club in Crossways.  Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day was that all three VMCC Dorset Section riders who took part each won a prize:

From left-to-right:

  • Paul Wirdnam: Most Desirable Bike (1935 Ariel 600cc Square Four OHC)
  • Phil Allen: Best Bike (1936 Sunbeam 500cc Model 9 OHV)
  • Ken Druce: Oldest Bike (1932 Sunbean 500cc Model 9 OHV)

Great day for everyone who took part!
