Surprisingly Saturday dawned dry contrary to the forecast overnight thunder storms and even more surprisingly stayed dry all day. This prompted 13 members plus two pillions to sign on at Blackmarsh Farm, which has now been taken over by Hunts and renamed The Farmyard Kitchen. The cafe has been extended but the food is still good.
We set off on a 32 mile route to Sweets Cafe at Westhay via Somerton, Butleigh, Glastonbury and Godney. The excellent views of Glastonbury Tor are unfortunately spoilt by the large number of derelict caravans parked or abandoned by the roadside. But the Avalon Marshes were looking very good with lots of nesting swans at Westhay Nature Reserve.
As promised the roads across the Levels were shockingly bumpy at times and needed care especially over bridges. As you were warned in advance, I am rejecting all claims for chiropractor and dental treatment!
Luckily we got to Sweets Cafe just before a large group of cyclists so didn’t have too long to wait for lunch, except for Neil who never got to the front and gave up!
The return 30 mile route took us back to Sherborne by way of Ashcott, Langport and Yeovilton. Plenty of water at Yeovilton Weir even though we have not had much rain lately.
We were in fact below sea level at times going across the Levels and even parts Yeovilton Airfield are also below sea level.
As my photos are not considered to be of adequate quality to grace our website, Paul W kindly took some deemed to be of a acceptable standard, I did sneak in a few though!
We have a weekend off now but have breakfast on Saturday at The Old Brewery and then the ridiculous Ex – Chairmans Challenge on the 29th, thankfully I will be safely away in Scotland!
