Report from Ray Dickinson:
Four Dorset members joined Somerset for the annual Cornwall ride to St Ives. My self and Linda were on the BMW R100 GS, Dave Brown BMW R800 and to prove you don’t need a big or modern bike Mike Gardiner rode a 1970s Honda CB200. There was around 30 bikes and one sidecar all VMCC eligible. Friday morning we meet up at Wellington Garden centre for a 9.00 o’clock start that was a 60 mile ride from home, Phil the organiser had planned a 160 mile route on quiet roads with coffee and lunch stops. We arrived at our hotel for the three nights at around 5.00 pm and all sat down to an evening meal and chance to catch up with friends who we have not seen for a while.
Saturday 45 miles was cloudy and wet but the trip to the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum along the coast road was worth while we had a talk by an interesting lady followed by a look round the tunnels and displays.
Sunday planned route of 55 miles took us around the Cornish lanes to
Porthleven for lunch returning via Marazion and St Michael’s Mount.
Our evening meal was a superb carvery, so we had a walk after, around
the town before ending up in the bar.
Monday return trip 164 miles again on quiet road and across Dartmore
for lunch at the old Police station at Prince Town were some of us
left the planned route to head for home.
Four days 495 miles good company on great biking roads. we travelled at
about 50 mph which gave us time to take in the scenery and Mike had no
trouble keeping up we travelled in small groups which helped with
navigation, if you feel you would enjoy this type of ride next April
Somerset puts on the twin Dragon four days round Wales.
