It didn’t like the ford at Fifehead Neville

Thankfully, yesterday there was no repetition of the 2020 Winter Run which resulted in 4 riders coming off their bikes due to ice on the road.  In fact, it was quite warm but there was plenty of water, mud and grit on the roads to keep us alert.  I think we had about 12 sign-on in Dikes Supermarket car park with a few others who came to see us off.

I had intended to avoid the ford at Fifehead Neville but my newly arrived BSA B25SS Gold Star (yes, this 250cc really was marketed as a Gold Star!) was going so well, I thought “Let’s do it”.  Big mistake as 1 mile later I ground to a halt with no ignition.  On Facebook, Simon Barker says “we almost stopped to see how fast Ken Druce can push a BSA but someone said “bollocks, let’s leave them to it” so we did!” — thanks for your help Simon 🙂   In the end, Ken towed me home using nothing more than a piece of nylon string he had in his top box with William Webb acting as a back marker; both were duly rewarded with tea and chocolate biscuits.  As for the bike, after emptying water out of the points housing, it’s up-and-running again now with a cork gasket fitted under the chrome cover!  I think I was the only breakdown on the run 🙁

Many thanks to Bernard Jones for putting this 33 mile route together.
