I said to Bernard before the run how much I hated the road to Dinnington Dock, well this time it surpassed itself! The potholes, mud and gravel were of epic proportions. Never again!
Anyway the rest of the route was very enjoyable and the weather surprisingly good. We ‘bailed out’ at Stoford as we were close to home and the bridge was closed which would have necessitated a diversion.
Thanks to Bernard for good day out, his report below.
I think I can claim a 15 rider sign on as a good turnout, plus 3 lady passengers. It was a fine dry day but rather nippy. We gathered at the Virginia Ash, but the pub was not open this time, however I understand future gatherings will have coffee and bacon rolls as in the past.
All set off OK, no horse riders but we did meet some steam on the way back – a traction engine – but soon got past.
Our break was at Yandles Yard in Martock, not too busy, we sat inside, whereas previously we had gathered on the outside picnic tables, but I did see a number of gloves resting on radiators, indicative of the low external temperature. After nosh we set off again southwards.
I had put on the signing on sheet to be beware of field run off, but the road down to Dinnington Dock was a mega muddy runoff, Dorset Dakar classification. When we arrived back at the Virginia Ash, we could see our boots, overtrousers and forward facing part of the bike, all well plastered with mud. However I found it a most enjoyable day.
